Sea Venture arrived in the anchorage off Isla San Andres yesterday morning. They had a rough ride the first day out of Panama, with nasty seas making life quite uncomfortable. When these moderated, they had a lovely sail, but still had to hold on while preparing meals: the gentle swells would suddenly toss in a big one (6-8 feet). Michael called me from sea to say that he’d been able to shower and shave and was feeling much more human.
Isla San Andres may belong to Colombia, but it’s a bit out of place, located just south of the Nicaraguan banks, some 234 miles northward from Colon, Panama. Michael and Erwin had to slow Sea Venture down when the wind piped up during the wee hours of Tuesday so that they wouldn’t get to the island in the middle of the night. They dropped the main and tightened sheets so they managed to forereach at about 1.5 knots.
As you can see from the pictures, the channel into the anchorage is quite tricky. You can pick out their first anchoring spot at the green arrow. After checking into the country, they did move, but I don’t have that position report yet.
Michael reports that revelers have descended on the island from Colombia, probably for the Pascal celebration. He, Erwin, and their newly arrived crew member, Bernie, dined last night at a fine restaurant, full of attentive waiters, linen napkins — and terrible food. As both Michael and Erwin will attest, the further away from Mexico they’ve traveled, the less they’ve enjoyed the food. We all remember the fine meals we shared at Playa Mazatlan. Sigh.
Hey there Normandie…looks like you’re having fun 🙂 Sorry about the yuk food…you can just never tell can you…actually we look for a restaurant that’s packed with locals…they have to be producing something edible there..ha ha We’re in Panama at Las Brisas anchorage. Hoping to leave for the Marquesas soon! I’m really looking forward to this our 6th ocean crossing. 🙂 I just love being offshore. Sylvie, hey. Yes, you probably went to Mi Ranchita there near Las Brisas. We thoroughly enjoyed it, but still preferred the Mexican fare. Hope you two have a grand time en route to the Marquesas — wish we were headed in that direction, but you never know where life will take you.
I’ll take a look at the shop soon!
